The American Cancer Society estimates that nationwide, one in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime.
In Virginia’s Central Shenandoah Health District, which encompasses Harrisonburg, the top cancer from 2016 to 2020 was female breast cancer, with an incidence rate of about 128 per 100,000.
In the Lord Fairfax Health District, which includes Winchester and surrounding counties like Shenandoah, the incidence rate was 117 per 100,000.
Pink Power Breast Cancer Awareness Day at Shenandoah Downs in nearby Woodstock is on Saturday, Oct. 19 — an opportunity to show your support locally for an important cause this Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
This day will include a raffle and silent auction to benefit the ACS Harrisonburg / Shenandoah Valley service area.
Locally, the ACS supports transportation grants through hospitals that service the Shenandoah Valley area.
A ride to and from treatment is around $50 to $60. Consider the thousands of dollars this event has raised in past years, and now you’re helping hundreds of patients.
The ACS also funds cancer research and a 24/7 help line that benefits all patients.
The harness horse races at Shenandoah Downs that day will be named in honor of individuals affected by breast cancer — just another way to recognize our neighbors.
